For those who want to keep up with the "Pure Language", I found out this week that at the most recent Elder's School, they were told that the Announcements should no longer include the following:
1. Name of public talk and speaker for Sunday
2. Synopsis of all the parts that are coming up on the rest of the Service Meeting
The information is already on the Information Board so they don't need to take time during the Announcements to cover it.
There you go. Now you can keep in step with "present truth".

A New Year's Resolution- I Gotta Stop Reading Anything From Watchtower
by OnTheWayOut ini am a fan of anything wts hates, like smurfs and birthdays, clinking glasses in a toast, exchanging gifts on december 25th.
i have never really been the person to set new year's resolutions, but it is something wts would not like.. anyway, i used to read blondie's comments on the wt study article.
i remember how it kept me mad at wts to read such stupid stuff from them.

Kids say the darndest things.
by Open mind incute little story i thought you might enjoy.
my teenage, non-true-believing son was recently baby sitting for some jw relatives so they could enjoy a nice evening dining out with my wife and i. the jw parents of the little kids are very liberal and we enjoy their company from time to time.
anyway, my son had just one ethical dilemma facing him as he contemplated his evening with the kids.

Morbidzbaby: "She knew how it went,"
Yeah, when he first told us, we were thinking "What did you do?!? Pray to Odin? Thor? Allah? The FSM?"
He swears it was a generic, JW-approved prayer, but after we had time to think about it, our guess is that she's used to her JW Daddy saying the same old boring idiosyncratic catch phrases at every meal, and when my son didn't know the exact same phraseology, she noticed the difference and spoke up.

edited to add: Just saw wasanelderonce's comments. Yup. Think you nailed it. Giving a family prayer every day really got to be a drag towards the end of my JW days.

Cute little story I thought you might enjoy.
How was he going to handle the prayer?
I told him he could ask the kids to say their own prayer if he didn't feel up to it. He decided to offer a watered down, ecumenical prayer. He thanked "Jehovah" for the food, their company and the beautiful day, and concluded "in Jesus name, Amen."
Here's the funny part. Half-way through the prayer, the little 2 or 3 year old girl interrupts my son's prayer with:
"THAT'S NOT HOW IT GOES!"
So my son says, "OK, do you want to finish the prayer?"
She says, "No, that's OK."
We all had a pretty good laugh later on as us non-JWs were driving home.

Thanks for the info Blondie. I'll add it to my never-ending list.
I heard a snippet on NPR the other day explaining some of the benefits of gossip. Can't remember all the specifics, but one was, you're confiding in the person you're gossiping to and, provided the gossip isn't too horific, it's a healthy aspect of social interaction.

Recent C.O. visit: Bad news re: U.S. English meeting attendance
by Open mind invisiting a nearby town during his thursday night service talk mentioned how poor meeting attendance is in the english-speaking u.s. congregations.
he said that when the gb reduced the weekly meetings from 3 to 2, there was a brief surge in meeting attendance percentages.
after a few months it began to slide and it hasn't stopped sliding.
